ASLM Background
The African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) is a pan-African, non-profit organisation headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. ASLM’s mission is to advance the laboratory medicine services and networks needed to support preventive medicine, quality patient care and disease control in Africa. Responsibilities:

ASLM seeks Interns (multiple hires) to assist with overall programmatic activities including conference planning coordination and meeting logistics coordination. The Intern agrees to work with the Programme for at least a six-month period (through December 2014). Upon mutual agreement, the Intern may renew participation in the Programme. This is an unpaid internship position; a small stipend will be provided.

ASLM is looking for highly motivated individuals with an efficient and organised work style, excellent communication skills and a high degree of self-confidence. Interns must be able to function independently, be a self-starter, dedicated, and have a strong commitment to excellence. Interns should also exhibit a number of important personal qualities: resourcefulness, responsibility, tenacity, independence, energy, and work ethic.

Under the guidance and direction of the Senior Communications Officer and Lead Programme Coordinator, the Intern may be responsible for the following (actual assignments depend on experience):

  • Provide general administrative support to ASLM Programme Coordinators.
  • Draft communications outreach such as letters to speakers, attendees for ASLM-organised meetings/trainings.
  • Support the ASLM2014 conference planning team with general administrative tasks.
  • Develop content for the ASLM and ASLM2014 websites and other promotional materials.
  • Contribute content for the conference website, social media outlets as well as assist in developing marketing communications targeting different audiences.
  • Review, edit and/or translate materials drafted by others.

Requirements::

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

  • Possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • Demonstrated capability to handle multiple tasks under tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications with proficiency in Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Experience writing concise, targeted materials related to laboratory or public health subjects.
  • Possess strong English-language writing skills; candidates with writing (or translating) skills in Arabic, French and Portuguese are encouraged to apply.
